Protest in Sylhet Against Frequent Load Shedding

Desk News: A human chain was organized by the Surma Boys Club to protest the frequent load shedding in Sylhet. The event took place on Tuesday (September 10) at 5 PM in front of the Electric Supply Office in the city.

The protest was presided over by Anwar Hossain, founder of Surma Boys Club, and conducted by Vice President Gopal Bahadur. During the protest, speakers expressed their concerns about the unbearable situation caused by constant load shedding in Sylhet city. They mentioned that the authorities are conducting load shedding almost every hour without any specific schedule, causing extreme inconvenience to the city’s residents. In this scorching heat, frequent power outages have made life difficult for everyone, with businesses forced to operate in darkness and severe water shortages occurring in households. Children and the elderly are especially suffering from health issues due to the lack of electricity in such extreme weather conditions.

The speakers demanded an immediate end to this load shedding and urged the authorities to explain why it is happening so frequently. They questioned why load shedding occurs despite electricity production being much higher than demand in Sylhet. The speakers also called for an end to the discriminatory practice of prolonged power cuts in the city.

Notable individuals who spoke at the human chain included senior member of Surma Boys Club Abdul Ahad Elish, labor leader M. Barkat Ali, journalists Sheikh Abdul Majid, Hasan M. Shamim, joint general secretary of Surma Boys Club and journalist Rezwan Ahmed, journalists Mamun Chowdhury and Delwar Hossain Dilu, as well as Nadim Ahmed Tipu and Md. Shipon Mia.
