Desk News: The Prophet Muhammad (SM) was born in the Year of the Elephant, the same year as the famous event when Abraha’s army attempted to destroy the Kaaba but failed. Although the Prophet was born on a Monday, historians have different opinions about the exact date of his birth. However, many have concluded that it was on the 12th of Rabi’ al-Awwal, which is now widely celebrated around the world as the Prophet’s birthday.
Regarding the Prophet’s birth, the famous companion Hassan ibn Thabit (RA) said, “By Allah, I was a boy of seven or eight years at the time. Though I was young, I was strong and tall enough to understand what was happening. Suddenly, I heard a Jewish man in Yathrib calling out loudly from the top of a fortress. When the Jews gathered, he announced, ‘Tonight, the star of Ahmad has risen.'”
According to Ibn Ishaq, when the Prophet Muhammad (SM) was born, his mother Amina sent word to his grandfather Abdul Muttalib, informing him of the birth of his grandson. Abdul Muttalib came to see the newborn, and Amina shared the dream she had during her pregnancy, the information she had been told about the child, and the name she was instructed to give him.
After hearing all this, Abdul Muttalib took his grandson in his arms and carried him to the Kaaba. There, in front of everyone, he expressed his joy at the birth of his grandson and entrusted the orphaned child to the protection of Allah, saying:
“All praise is due to Allah, who has blessed me with this pure child. He is the leader of all infants in the cradle. I entrust him to the protection of this sacred house, seeking safety from the envy of the envious and the malice of enemies.”
