Desk News: In a prestigious medal parade held in Juba, South Sudan, 200 members of the Bangladesh Navy Force Marine Unit (BANFMU-9) were awarded the United Nations Peacekeeping Medals for their exceptional contributions to the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS). The ceremony took place on Tuesday, with UNMISS Force Commander Lieutenant General Mohan Subramanian as the chief guest, who recognized the bravery and dedication of the Bangladeshi naval personnel.
The event was attended by senior officials from UNMISS Force Headquarters and other dignitaries. During the ceremony, Lt. Gen. Subramanian praised the Bangladesh Navy’s critical role in peacekeeping operations. He highlighted the unit’s ability to operate in challenging environments, particularly along the treacherous Nile River and in conflict zones, where they have ensured the safe transport of UN supplies, food, fuel, and other essential goods.
In addition to logistics, the BANFMU has been instrumental in conducting regular riverine patrols, reconnaissance missions, rescue operations, and diving missions, all while providing vital security for UN agencies operating in the region. The Force Commander expressed his gratitude to the Bangladesh Navy and the government of Bangladesh for their continuous support of global peacekeeping efforts.
Bangladesh has been a key contributor to UN peacekeeping missions, with the Navy contingent operating in South Sudan since 2015. As the only marine force in UNMISS, they have completed over 50 logistical operations, covering 1,300 kilometers along the Nile, under the UN’s “Operation Lifeline.”
The Bangladesh Navy’s commitment extends beyond South Sudan. Their warship, BNS Sangram, has also been flying the nation’s flag proudly in international waters, playing a significant role in global peace efforts across the volatile Mediterranean Sea.
The contributions of the Bangladesh Navy, both in South Sudan and in other international waters, continue to bring pride to the country and enhance global peacekeeping initiatives.
